The Malawi Hawk (Aristochromis christyi) is a magnificent and predatory Haplochromine Cichlid native to Lake Malawi, highly prized by experienced hobbyists for its striking piscivorous hunting behavior, unique lateral-flattened head shape, and brilliant metallic blue coloration in mature males.

Short Description & Highlights

The Malawi Hawk Cichlid (approx. 2.5–4.0 inches / 6–10 cm) is an apex predatory cichlid that grows into a powerful and visually arresting centerpiece fish. Named for its hawk-like hunting strategy—where it tilts sideways to peer around rocks before striking—this species is best suited for large, species-specific or robust African Cichlid setups and requires an aquarist with intermediate to advanced experience.
