The Anubias barteri var. nana 'Bonsai' (often referred to as 'Mini') is one of the smallest and most sought-after miniature epiphytic aquarium plants available. Treasured for its dense cluster of tiny, dark green leaves and extremely slow growth rate, it is an ideal specimen for nano aquariums, intricate aquascapes, and detailing hardscapes.
Short Description & Highlights
Anubias barteri var. nana 'Bonsai' is a hardy, dwarf aquatic plant that requires minimal maintenance, making it a stellar choice for beginner aquarists. Because it absorbs nutrients through the water column via its creeping rhizome rather than heavy root-feeding, it is typically attached to driftwood or rocks rather than buried in the substrate.

Detailed Beginner Care Guide
1. Planting & Hardscape Attachment
Never bury the horizontal stem (rhizome) of the Anubias directly into aquarium gravel or sand, as this will cause the plant to rot and die. Instead, tie or glue the plant securely to driftwood, rocks, or porous ceramics using fishing line, cotton thread, or specialized aquarium safe cyanoacrylate glue. Over time, its natural roots will anchor themselves firmly to the hardscape.
2. Lighting & Algae Prevention
Because of its exceptionally slow growth rate, intense or prolonged lighting can cause green spot algae to form on its tough, long-lasting leaves. To prevent this, position the plant in shaded areas under driftwood overhangs or maintain moderate, balanced lighting schedules (6 to 8 hours daily).
3. Fertilization & Maintenance
The 'Bonsai' variant requires very little intervention to thrive. It does not demand high-tech carbon dioxide (CO2) injection, though basic liquid water column fertilizers containing iron and potassium will keep its foliage rich and green. Routine maintenance simply involves gently wiping away routine debris or snipping off older leaves if they show signs of aging.
