As an epiphyte, Anubias heterophylla should never have its horizontal root system (rhizome) buried directly into aquarium substrate, as this will cause the plant to rot and perish. Instead, attach it securely to driftwood, lava rock, or aquarium decorations using fishing line, cotton thread, or safe cyanoacrylate aquarium glue. Its fine rootlets can wander into the substrate for anchoring, but the main stem must remain exposed to open water.
