Detailed Beginner Care & Culturing Guide
1. Housing & Environmental Setup
To establish your white worm culture, transfer the 500g starter into a shallow, ventilated plastic container (such as a small storage shoebox). White worms thrive best in cool, dark environments. Use a damp, chemical-free substrate like organic potting soil, peat moss, or coconut coir blended with a bit of crushed oyster shell or calcium carbonate to buffer acidity. Maintain a cool ambient temperature between 60°F and 68°F (15°C–20°C). Excessively warm environments will quickly cause the culture to crash.
2. Feeding & Maintenance
Feed the culture sparingly every few days by placing small portions of nutrient-rich supplements—such as plain oatmeal soaked in milk or water, white bread soaked in water, or boiled potato slices—directly onto or slightly beneath the substrate surface. Only add more food after the previous portion has been nearly consumed to prevent mold outbreaks, foul odors, or mite infestations. Keep the substrate consistently moist like a wrung-out sponge, but never waterlogged.
3. Harvesting for Your Aquarium
As the population multiplies densely along the surface edges or underneath the food sources, you can easily harvest the worms. Gently lift clumps of worms using tweezers or a blunt knife and rinse them briefly in a small container of aquarium water or a fine mesh net before feeding them to your fish. Because white worms are rich in fats, they serve as a phenomenal conditioning and growth food, though they are best fed 2 to 3 times a week alongside a balanced flake or pellet diet to prevent fish from becoming overweight.
