The Hygrophila corymbosa (commonly known as Nomaphila or Giant Hygro) is a robust, highly adaptable stem plant native to Southeast Asia, prized for its vibrant, broad light-green leaves and exceptional hardiness.
Short Description & Highlights
The Hygrophila corymbosa is a fast-growing, upright background plant that creates an instant sense of a lush, established landscape. Generating thick stems and large, beautiful leaves, it acts as a phenomenal natural nutrient extractor that helps outcompete algae. Its incredible resilience and low-demand requirements make it one of the most reliable and rewarding starter plants for beginner aquarists.

Detailed Beginner Care Guide
1. Planting & Aquascaping Placement
Because of its tall stature (reaching up to 20–50+ cm), Hygrophila corymbosa is best positioned along the background or midground sections of the aquarium. When planting, gently remove the stems from their packaging or anchor, strip the lower leaves from the bottom few centimeters, and insert them individually into a nutrient-rich substrate or gravel spaced a couple of centimeters apart to allow adequate light flow. It also thrives in open-top aquariums where it can safely grow out of the water, occasionally sprouting delicate purple flowers.
2. Water Parameters & Maintenance
This species is remarkably forgiving, accepting a wide spectrum of general water hardness and active chemistry. While it does not require specialized CO2 injection to survive, providing a modest lighting setup alongside routine liquid water-column fertilizers (particularly rich in potassium and iron) will prevent lower leaf yellowing. Due to its rapid upward growth, regular pruning is required. Simply trim the stems back when they reach the water surface; topping the plant encourages dense lateral branching, transforming a single stem into a thick, bushy structural center.
3. Propagation
Propagation is remarkably simple and cost-effective for hobbyists. Cut healthy side shoots or upper head cuttings (about 10-15 cm long) using clean aquascaping scissors, strip the leaves from the bottom node, and replant the cutting directly into the substrate. New roots will establish rapidly within days, allowing you to quickly scale up your planted layout.
