Glossostigma elatinoides, popularly known as "Glosso", is one of the smallest and most sought-after carpeting plants in freshwater aquascaping. Originating from Australia and New Zealand, it features tiny, spoon-shaped bright green leaves that create a stunning, lawn-like carpet across the aquarium foreground.
Short Description & Highlights
Glossostigma elatinoides is a premier foreground carpeting plant prized for creating lush, open-lawn aesthetics reminiscent of nature-style aquariums. While it requires dedicated care—specifically high lighting and nutrient-rich parameters—it rewards the patient aquarist with an unmatched, vibrant green carpet.

Detailed Beginner Care Guide
1. Placement & Planting Technique
Glosso is exclusively planted in the foreground to form a dense green carpet. Because it is supplied in small portions or tissue culture cups, separate the clump into tiny individual plugs containing 2 to 3 stems each. Plant these small clusters about 1 to 2 inches apart using aquascaping tweezers, pressing them gently into a nutrient-dense substrate so only the top leaves remain visible. They will quickly send out runners to bridge the gaps.
2. Lighting Requirements
Lighting is the defining factor for success with Glossostigma elatinoides. It demands high-intensity lighting. If the lighting is insufficient or shaded by larger driftwood and plants, Glosso will immediately begin to grow vertically upward instead of creeping horizontally across the substrate.
3. Carbon Dioxide ($\text{CO}_2$) and Fertilization
To achieve a tight, fast-spreading carpet, pressurized (CO2) injection is heavily recommended. Combine (CO2) with a comprehensive liquid fertilizer regimen and nutrient-rich aqusoil. Regular, careful trimming once the carpet thickens will encourage lateral branching and prevent the lower layers from suffocating.
