The Schismatoglottis prietoi is a rare and highly attractive freshwater aquarium plant native to the Philippines, celebrated for its sleek, elongated green leaves and resemblance to popular rhizome species like Anubias and Bucephalandra.
Short Description & Highlights
Schismatoglottis prietoi is a compact, slow-growing aquatic plant that typically reaches heights of 3 to 8 cm. Featuring rich, elliptic foliage, it is exceptionally well-suited for foreground to midground placement in nano tanks and detailed aquascapes. Undemanding and adaptable, it easily acclimates to low-light environments without requiring complex CO2 injection setups, making it a stress-free addition for beginner aquarists.

Detailed Beginner Care Guide
1. Planting and Hardscape Attachment
Like Anubias, Schismatoglottis prietoi features a horizontal stem called a rhizome from which its leaves and roots grow. When planting, you can attach it directly to driftwood or rocks using fishing line or aquarium-safe cyanoacrylate glue, ensuring the rhizome remains completely uncovered to prevent rotting. Alternatively, it can be planted lightly in fine gravel or nutrient-rich substrate, taking care not to bury the main rhizome beneath the surface. Over time, it will naturally produce runners to form neat, dense clusters.
2. Lighting & Nutrient Management
This resilient plant thrives under basic freshwater aquarium lighting, meaning standard LED strips included with starter kits are more than sufficient. High-intensity light is not necessary and can sometimes cause unwanted algae growth on the leaves. Because of its slow growth rate, its nutrient demands are minimal; standard bioload waste from your fish will often provide enough baseline nutrition, eliminating the strict requirement for liquid fertilizers.
3. Water Parameters & Acclimatization
Schismatoglottis prietoi prefers stable tropical water conditions ranging from 20 to 28°C (68 to 82°F) and adapts seamlessly to soft or moderately hard water parameters. When first introduced to a new aquarium, the plant may experience a brief transition period where older emersed leaves melt slightly; this is completely normal as the plant adapts to a fully submerged aquatic environment and will soon be followed by fresh, healthy underwater growth.
