The Brazilian Micro Sword (Lilaeopsis brasiliensis) is a popular, low-growing foreground aquarium plant native to South America, celebrated for its narrow, bright green, grass-like leaves that create a stunning underwater lawn effect.
Short Description & Highlights
Lilaeopsis brasiliensis (commonly known as Micro Sword) reaches an average height of 4 to 7 cm, spreading horizontally via underground runners (stolons) to form a dense, lush carpet. While it requires moderate care and patience due to its slow initial establishment phase, it is a rewarding and accessible option for beginners aiming to master natural aquascaping layouts.

Detailed Beginner Care Guide
1. Planting & Substrate Setup
To achieve a seamless lawn, success begins with proper planting technique. Unpot the plant, gently wash away any nutrient gel or Rockwool, and divide the portion into small individual clumps consisting of a few stems each. Plant these small portions roughly 2 to 3 cm apart in a nutrient-rich aqusoil or fine-grained aquarium gravel. Bury only the root system while keeping the crown (where leaves sprout) exposed above the substrate to prevent crown rot.
2. Lighting, Nutrients & CO2
Lilaeopsis brasiliensis requires adequate lighting intensity to maintain a compact, low-profile growth habit. If lighting is too dim, the blades will stretch upward awkwardly. While it can survive in low-tech setups, supplementing with carbon dioxide (CO2) and balanced liquid micro- and macro-fertilizers will drastically accelerate runner expansion and enrich leaf coloration.
3. Maintenance & Propagation
Maintenance is minimal due to its slow vertical growth rate. Once established, the carpet will naturally thicken on its own via lateral runners. Routine pruning is rarely needed except to trim stray runners that wander into neighboring hardscape elements or open swimming areas.
