Detailed Beginner Care Guide
1. Placement & Aquascaping
Moneywort is traditionally planted in the midground or background zones of the aquarium, where its vertical, unbranching stems create striking walls of green foliage. When planting, separate individual stems and gently insert them into the substrate about an inch apart, leaving a small space between each stem to allow light to reach the lower leaves. It is also an exceptional choice for open-top aquariums and paludariums, where it can easily transition to grow emersed above the waterline.
2. Lighting & Parameters
This plant is exceptionally forgiving when it comes to water chemistry, thriving in soft or hard water across a broad temperature spectrum. While it adapts readily to low-light setups, providing moderate to high illumination encourages tighter internodal spacing and denser, more compact growth. CO2 injection is entirely optional, though regular application of a comprehensive liquid aquarium fertilizer will keep the foliage robust and vivid.
3. Maintenance & Propagation
Due to its moderate-to-fast growth rate, regular pruning is recommended to maintain shape and prevent it from blanketing the water surface. Trimming is remarkably simple: cut healthy stems roughly halfway down with sharp aquascaping scissors, and replant the trimmed upper portions directly back into the substrate. The cut stems will quickly develop new roots, allowing you to effortlessly expand your underwater garden.
