1. Why Test for Ammonium?
During the nitrogen cycle, organic waste (uneaten food, fish waste, and decaying plant matter) breaks down into toxic ammonium and ammonia (NH3/NH4). Beneficial bacteria then convert this waste into nitrite and subsequently into safer nitrate. For beginners, tracking ammonium levels ensures that your biological filter is fully established and capable of handling livestock safely.
2. How to Use the Kit

Rinse the enclosed glass vials thoroughly with the aquarium water you wish to test.

Use the provided syringe to fill each vial with exactly 5 ml of sample water.

Add the specified drops of reagents to one of the vials in the correct sequence, sealing and mixing gently.

Place both vials into the comparator block (placing the untreated water vial on the blank side to offset water color) and match the color against the provided scale.
3. Interpreting Results & Action Steps
Ideal levels should be undetectable or strictly below 0.25mg/l}. If high ammonium is detected, use the included reference table (which cross-references your current pH level) to determine actual free ammonia toxicity. Immediate water changes, reduced feeding, and the addition of beneficial bacterial starters are recommended to protect your fish.
