The Microsorum pteropus ‘Green Gnome’ is a distinct, miniature cultivar of the classic Java Fern, prized for its exceptionally compact growth form, rich green textured leaf blades, and robust hardiness.
Short Description & Highlights
Microsorum pteropus ‘Green Gnome’ is a slow-growing, highly manageable aquatic fern that stays remarkably small, typically reaching a height of only 8 to 15 cm. Its petite stature and pronounced, attractive leaf veins make it an outstanding foreground or midground plant. Because it is an epiphyte that does not require planting in substrate, it is exceptionally beginner-friendly and ideal for nano cubes, small aquariums, and intricate aquascaping designs.

Detailed Beginner Care Guide
1. Planting & Placement (Crucial Step)
Unlike stem plants, the Java Fern ‘Green Gnome’ is an epiphyte. Do not bury the horizontal stem (rhizome) into aquarium gravel or sand, as doing so will cause the tissue to suffocate and rot. Instead, anchor the plant securely to pieces of driftwood, lava rock, or decorative aquascaping stone using fishing line, cotton thread, or specialized aquarium-safe cyanoacrylate glue. Over time, the plant's dark wiry roots will naturally grip the hardscape.
2. Lighting & Water Requirements
This dwarf fern thrives under low to moderate lighting conditions. Intense, high-intensity lighting without adequate carbon dioxide injection can trigger unwanted algae growth on its slow-growing leaves. It adapts smoothly to a wide spectrum of water hardness levels and pH ranges, requiring only standard routine partial water changes (20% to 30% weekly) to remain pristine.
3. Nutrition & Maintenance
Because of its slow growth rate, ‘Green Gnome’ demands very little fertilization. It absorbs nutrients directly from the water column, meaning a light weekly dose of a balanced liquid aquarium fertilizer containing iron and potassium will keep the foliage a deep, healthy green. CO2 supplementation is entirely optional. Pruning is rarely necessary; simply trim away older, discolored fronds from the base of the rhizome if needed.
