The Narrow Leaf Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus 'Narrow') is an exceptionally graceful aquatic epiphyte featuring fine, slender, bright green fronds that offer a more delicate and refined look than the standard broad-leaved Java Fern. Its distinct, linear leaves grow at striking angles, making it a favorite for aquascapers looking to create natural depth, texture, and a sense of scale in freshwater aquariums.
Short Description & Highlights
Microsorum pteropus 'Narrow' is a hardy, slow-growing rhizome plant originating from Southeast Asia. Because it is an epiphyte, it does not require planting in the substrate, making it remarkably easy to anchor onto driftwood, rocks, or porous ornaments. Highly resilient and adaptable, it is exceptionally well-suited for beginners, low-tech setups, and community tanks housing peaceful fish or shrimp.

Detailed Beginner Care Guide
1. Planting & Hardscape Attachment
The golden rule for growing Java Fern is never bury the rhizome (the horizontal stem from which leaves and roots sprout). Burying it in aquarium gravel or soil will cause the rhizome to suffocate and rot. Instead, use cotton thread, fishing line, or specialized aquarium-safe gel glue to lightly attach the roots or rhizome to driftwood, lava rock, or dragon stone. Over time, the plant will naturally anchor itself using its dark, wiry roots.
2. Lighting & Algae Management
As a shade-dwelling plant in its native habitat, Narrow Leaf Java Fern thrives under low-to-moderate lighting. Intense lighting combined with excess nutrients can trigger unwanted algae growth on its slow-growing fronds. Keeping light periods to around 6 to 8 hours daily keeps the plant healthy and minimizes maintenance.
3. Nutrients & Maintenance
While it can survive on fish waste and column nutrients alone, it responds very well to regular doses of liquid aquarium fertilizers (particularly containing potassium and iron) to prevent translucent or yellowing leaves. Pruning is minimal; simply trim away older or damaged leaves directly at the rhizome level using sharp aquarium scissors. You may occasionally notice small black bumps or tiny plantlets forming on the underside of mature leaves—this is entirely natural reproduction, not a disease.
