Detailed Beginner Care Guide
1. Aquarium Setup & Substrate
The most important requirement for Pangio doriae is a soft, fine sand substrate. These loaches naturally burrow into the bed and sift substrate through their gills; rough or sharp gravel can cause skin abrasion or damage their delicate facial barbels. Provide ample hiding spots using driftwood roots, rock caves, or dense aquatic plants like Java Fern and Cryptocoryne.
2. Water Conditions & Acclimation
-
Temperature: 23°C – 28°C (73°F – 82°F)
-
pH Level: 6.0 – 7.2
-
Hardness: Soft to medium (2 – 10 dGH)
To ensure a smooth transition, always use the drip acclimation method for 30–45 minutes before adding them to your tank. Keep aquarium lids tightly secured, as loaches can jump or squeeze through small openings when adjusting to new surroundings.
3. Feeding & Social Behavior
Pangio doriae are naturally timid when kept individually; always keep a minimum group of 5 to 6 individuals so they feel secure enough to explore during the daytime. Feed them sinking omnivore pellets, micro wafers, or frozen foods (such as bloodworms or brine shrimp) shortly after switching off the aquarium lights.
